A CHRISTMAS PRAYER

I tried to talk with you last night
I tried to reach into the light
My mind was closed, my spirits low
I called for you. My tears did flow
They say you listen, hear our plea
Our thoughts are known, our plans, our dreams
But when I listened, for your voice
I found a darkness in the void

But then you showed me how to pray,
To lift my soul, push dark away.
We're travellers, Lord, along life's road
Our choices made, we feel the load
Our burden though is light to bear
If you are with us, ever there.
Your angels guide us, through the nights
Companions with us, tiny lights.

You tell me that your children cry
Think you don't listen, pass them by
When all along you walk their path
Hold out your hand, give them your staff.
To talk with you is not so hard
Just close our eyes, let darkness pass
And send our thoughts out high above
They reach your ears on wings of doves

The Christmas star does cast its light
Along the pathways, through the night
And when the Christ Child's face we see
Our lives renewed, our spirits free,
We face the future, peace our friend
Our fears are gone, the battles end
The year ahead seems full of hope
And all because to us you spoke.

When sanity has failed this world
When people die and minds are cold
The Lord sends peace into our hearts
Lifts up our souls, sets us apart
We are his soldiers, battle worn
Our weary eyes, from death are torn
Just reach his hands, and you will find
His cloak wraps around you, gentle, kind.

Take just a minute, every day
Don't let your haste get in the way
Lift up your hearts in silent prayer
And tell him all your worries, cares
He listens to each one of you,
No matter what you say or do,
Remember though, to listen too
Remember that he talks to you.
Pray.
